Coping with Grief
A behinds the scenes look of how Journey Through Grief was created.
Journey Through Grief
From heartache to hope, a journey through the grieving process.
Project Overview
Journey Through Grief is an award-winning recipient of two American Advertising Awards. A Gold ADDY in the Elements of Advertising category as well as a Silver ADDY in the Public Service category. To create this piece we used a mix of illustrations, 3D, and traditional frame by frame animation. The mixture of the visuals, the message, and the animation take you through a journey of the grieving process that can be watch again and again. All images featured in this portfolio are property of Boncom, Motifize was contracted by Boncom to create the styleframes, artwork, and animation.

Behind the Keyframes
The best way we found to create the transitions was to build assets within Cinema 4D and take advantage of the camera in a 3D program. The trick was to match 2D illustrations with 3D modeling, as you see on the clock zoom out scene, there is a point where we had to cut from a 3D rendering to a 2D composition within After Effects. Sometimes we used C4D as merely a reference and other times we rendered out the entire sequence and placed any 2D animations on top of the 3D renderings in After Effects.
Storyboard Sketches
Cameron Pinegar, Art Director at Boncom, was the mastermind behind these boards. These boards gave us a clear vision of what needed to be created before we spent hours upon hours polishing the artwork or beginning the animation process. For us at Motifize the script and storyboard are the base of all the work that will be done.
Artwork
Animation is a problem solving craft, so during the illustration phase, Dan, our founder and animator, was always thinking and researching of the best techniques to bring these illustrations to life. Extreme amounts of mental energy went into creating Journey Through Grief, Dan has been quoted to say that animating and illustrating this video was more challenging and mentally exhausting than hiking the entire state of Idaho, something that he accomplished in the summer of 2018.
If you are interested in an animated video, please feel free to contact us. We are very prompt to respond to inquiries and we would be happy to show you more of our work and our process.
